Same-sex Marriage Bill Passes Through French National Assembly

On Tuesday, April 23, 2013, France joined a group of thirteen other countries in the world that have legalized same-sex marriage. This policy change is in the face of aggressive opposition from conservatives. The French National Assembly passed the law with a 331 to 225 vote. This victory for same-sex marriage supporters comes in the aftermath of President Francois Hollande’s election, two years ago. Hollande had vowed to support same-sex marriage in his campaign. As soon as he signs the bill, the law will take effect. Another factor contributing to this progression is that the National Assembly is mostly Socialist – Hollande’s party. Despite this progress, protestors continue to voice their opinions, rallying through the streets of Paris. More protests throughout France are scheduled. These anti-same-sex marriage demonstrations are happening in the wake of homophobic abuse, which is becoming reportedly more widespread. Far-right groups have been known to attack individuals coming out of gay bars and other such places. Interior Minister Manuel Valls spoke out against such acts, stating that although France supports peaceful protests, such violence will not be tolerated.
This positive change in France will surely lead to an increase in civil unions, which will, in turn, lead to increased revenue for the government. This will obviously be beneficial for the government, especially in the current state. This change could also make France more enticing to same-sex marriage supporters in Europe and around the world, potentially leading to a population growth in France or reform in other European nations.
